New Works Part II.

Posted in Baskit, Fashion, Male Models, models, New Work, Photo Essay, Toky Photography, We Are All Smith by tokyphotography on July 7, 2011

I’ve been working a lot with the awesome guys from BaskitWear for the last few months. Mostly shooting product and look book images which are always very simple and to the point. Recently they asked me to photograph their new ads/promo images in a creative setting. The basic idea was a rock-climbing trip. In came by buddy Jake who is a rock climber … and after a lot of planning … I did a great shoot with them. Just like my We Are All Smith look book shoot, I realize how much I enjoyed shooting “stories” that when seen together there is a visual thread but also each image can stand on its own as a single shot. Here’s a sneak peek of one of the shots that’s on the Baskit website now. More to come….

Thank you to everyone who has visited, commented and e-mailed me about the Spirit of the San Francisco Marathon Photo essays!

I am very grateful to all of you and excited to announce that because of the huge success that project has been, I am starting a website dedicated exclusively to the photo essays as well as other running goodies. Not only that, I’m already in touch with other marathons to create other photo essays documenting different races around the country.

I love ALL your comments! Including comments made directly to me by three (!!!) different friends who asked me: “were you talking about me when you said that everyone gives excuses not to run a marathon?”… so for the record, I wasn’t talking about anyone in particular. The essays are full of “inside jokes” for runners, and we -all- hear those comments, and those are like the TOP comments that we all hear. So… anyways, I thought that was amusing… the more I do this the more I realize we runners are crazy people. Regular folk don’t need to run if they don’t want to 🙂 to each their own

Anyhow, I am hard at work on the marathon photo website. In the meantime, here are what some Facebook folks had to say about the photos over at the San Francisco Marathon Facebook page.

Speaking of Facebook… are you my fan on Facebook? and are you following me on Twitter? If not, this is a great opportunity to do so.

The Spirit of The San Francisco Marathon Part I

Posted in Marathons, Photo Essay, Running, San Francisco, Toky Photography by tokyphotography on July 27, 2010

Backstory:

I’ve completed three Los Angeles Marathons and one Nike Human Race. On my last LA Marathon back in March, I decided to take my camera with me and do a photo essay (see that post here). I posted it on my blog and tweeted about  it. Over the next few days my photo essay was seen by more than 6,000+ people (the Marathon had 26,000 runners) and was re-tweeted over and over again. The best part of it all was all the comments that people posted as replies to my photo essay as well as all the emails I received from runners that were grateful someone had done this for them as they could use it to show their families and friends what it was like on the course. It also helped me realize we all tend to have the same thoughts as we are running.

Since then I’ve wanted to go run different marathons across the USA and document the spirit of each city. Thanks from a little help from the organizers of the race, I present you: The Spirit of The San Francisco Marathon Part I (“Getting There”).

My flight was delayed 1:30 hrs because of "fog" in San Francisco.... Once we landed I could see what they meant.

Make sure you stop by the blog this Sunday/Monday for a full report & photo essay from San Francisco. I’m doing another photo essay like the one I did back in March for the LA Marathon (check that one out here).

Thanks to the lovely folks at the SF Marathon for this opportunity.

In the meantime here’s a little collage of pics from the LA Marathon.

New series: “Life”

Posted in New Work, Photo Essay, Still-life, Toky Photography by tokyphotography on April 5, 2010

Now for something a bit different…

A new still-life series: LIFE.

Veins (from the Latin vena) are blood vessels that carry blood towards the heart. Arteries carry oxygenated blood away from the heart. Blood is a specialized bodily fluid that delivers necessary substances to the body’s cells – such as nutrients and oxygen – and transports waste products away from those same cells.

It is estimated that there are over 60,000 miles of blood vessels in a child’s body and close to 100,000 miles in an adult’s. The circumference of the earth at the equator is 25,000 miles. If the blood vessels of an adult were lined up end to end, they would circle the equator four times.

We are all bigger than we think we are.
